Sled Island

Posted by John Manzo on June 27, 2008

We’re off to the big outdoor shows for Sled Island today and tomorrow. Sled Island is a new (last year was its first) modern rock festival in Calgary with 100+ shows in venues all over downtown, Beltline and a couple further afield. We decided to skip the intimate shows and do the mainstage festival thing, which is at Mewata Armoury (aka Shaw Millennium Park, or is that different? Anyone? Anyone?). Awesome to have this happening a manageable, oh, 15-minute walk from home, but ask me again when the mosquitoes start to attack.

On tap for today: Yo La Tengo, Tegan and Sara, Broken Social Scene; tomorrow: Jose Gonzalez, Jonathan Richman (and if he does “Give Paris One More Chance” I’m going to have a loud, loud orgasm), Of Montreal, Wire, Mogwai, with lots of local talent (Jane Vain, Summerlad) in there too.

Best alt rock event in Canada except, maybe, for NXNE. More to come.
