I'm thinking you didn't expect snow on your first day back(I don't think anyone but David Spence expected snow today and frankly I'm tired of it). Hope you had a good trip.

I'm happy about the return to spring too... although it does seem like there is a lot of variability...

Ok, the real comment here is Bravo! for the Starbucks experiment. Along the lines of your commentary, I frequent the same Second City location (it's a convenience thing; also, there are always tables available). One time I had a quite decent Americano there. So I thought, well, this is looking up... unfortunately, on subsequent visits to the same location, had only very mediocre results...

The point is, I think you are right - it's all the barista. Or mostly. Which would make it quite different from many other food items, right?

One day when I'm employed and making money, to spend, I want to buy an espresso machine and would love a few lessons. You make it all sound soo yummy.

As a former employee of McNally, the only thing I can think to say is "Hope the door doesn't hit you in the behind on the way out."
Good riddance to one of the worst places I have ever worked.
I could spend all day writing about the things that happened over the course of the two years I was employed by one of the greediest family businesses around.
Everyone who has worked at the store (and the list is massive in Calgary) knows exactly why the store couldn't survive, the McNally's just didn't care enough about their employees to make it work.
Not only have the McNallys left a city full of disappointed and upset customers, but they've also left a city full of very bitter ex-employees who are happy to see them go.

Moved here from Toronto a couple months ago - and just discovered fellow Calgarian foodies on chowhound...you have great recos!

I do have to say you're right on the money about Calgary being like TO circa 1991 (I moved there from HK in the late 80s), and that Calgary could be tooting its own horn a little louder. Have to admit I was initially surprised with the level of diversity here...I will own up to the fact I was probably an ignorant Torontonian. But nevermind that, because what's important is is the wonderful food that diversity can bring to a city! thanks for acknowledging the fact that the world's 2+ billion "Orientals" deserve more than just a "composite asian blob" label.

So here's to great food and a fantastic coffee culture here in Calgary! Next time you spot a "visible minority" of "asian" decent at artigiano/bumpy's, holler "Vee" - it might just be me.

Hi, it's nice to see a fellow gay, southern Albertan, sociologist on the intertubes! Although, to be fair, I'm only a sociologist in training (grad student), at the U of L. I do take a course in Calgary, though. Anyway, I enjoy your blog and look forward to reading more. Cheers!
